HUD Takes to Airwaves for Mortgage Awareness, Fair Lending

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is campaigning for fair housing through an effort to educate consumers and housing providers.

Hinging on the Fair Housing Act and in honor of “Fair Housing Month,” HUD said Wednesday it will be campaigning public service announcements on consumers’ rights and responsibilities under fair housing law. Digital and social media will also help to bolster the housing department’s initiative.

Ads in print, online and on the radio will run throughout the month to inform the public on topics including housing discrimination.

“The National Fair Housing Alliance and HUD have a long history of working together to promote fair housing throughout this country,” said Shanna L. Smith, president and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance. “Those seeking to rent, own, buy or insure a home need ongoing education about their fair housing rights and how to take action if they suspect discrimination.”

HUD is also utilizing mobile apps toward the fair lending initiative, first launched in February for iPhone and iPad. Copies of the campaign materials are accessible to lenders and to the public via HUD’s website.
