CFPB Names Antonakes as New Acting Deputy Director

Steven Antonakes will serve as Acting Deputy Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) until a replacement has been found for departing Deputy Director Raj Date, the agency announced today.

Before joining the CFPB in November 2010 as the Assistant Director of large Bank Supervision, Antonakes served as the Commissioner of Banks from 2003-2010, becoming only the second career bank examiner to hold the position.

Additionally, Antonakes’ track record includes serving as the first state voting member of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), Vice Chairman of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), as well as a founding member of the governing board of the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS).

Date, who served as the CFPB’s first Deputy Director, held key leadership roles in helping build the agency, such as the Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury and as the Associate Director for Research, Markets, and Regulations.

While the role is temporary, Antonakes will maintain responsibilities for his current duties as the agency’s Associate Director for Supervision, Enforcement, and Fair Lending.
