Attorneys general in the states of California and Nevada announced last week they are forming an alliance to crack down on mortgage fraud that is widespread in the wake of the housing crisis.
Attorneys General Kamala Harris (California) and Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada) announced they have launched a joint investigation alliance to assist homeowners who have been harmed by misconduct and fraud in the industry.
The investigation will target “predators that have evolved around distress and crisis,” Attorney General Harris said in a press conference last week. “This action is about requiring accountability and consequence.”
The two states’ offices will share intelligence, witnesses, reports and conclusions, Harris said, which will allow expansion and acceleration of the investigations.
“As many of us know, California and Nevada are probably some of the hardest hit states in the country as a result of the foreclosure crisis,” she said, noting that the mission of the alliance is to investigate wrongdoing in each area of the mortgage lending industry.
