How much house does 1 share of Berkshire Hathaway buy?

These cities’ average houses cost less than 1 share of Buffett’s baby

Close watchers of the stock market saw a milestone on Thursday. When the market closed on Thursday, shares of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) Class A sat at $202,850.

It was the first time that a single Class A share had ever been valued at more than $200,000.

Buffett has never authorized a split of his company’s stock; therefore shares of Berkshire Hathaway have continued to appreciate. In 2014 alone, the price of shares in Berkshire Hathaway has increased more than 15%.

With Berkshire’s stock breaking the $200,000 barrier, it got us thinking. How much would one share of Berkshire Hathaway buy out there in the real world?

Using the latest data from the National Association of Realtors, we did a little math. And as it turns out, one share of Berkshire Hathaway buys quite a lot.

In fact, with the proceeds from one Berkshire share, you could buy the average house in a whopping 120 of the top 175 housing markets in the U.S.

One share of Berkshire Hathaway can buy you the average home Salem, Oregon ($200,400), Virginia Beach, Virginia ($200,000) and Fort Meyers, Florida ($199,800). And that’s just the top three.

One share of Berkshire would also buy the average house in Springfield, Massachusetts ($199,000), Phoenix, Arizona ($198,600); Las Vegas, Nevada ($196,200); New Orleans, Louisiana ($168,900); and Indianapolis, Indiana ($148,700)

And for $150,800, you can even own a home in Warren Buffett’s backyard of Omaha, Nebraska.

For the unfortunate few cities at the bottom of the list: Cumberland, Maryland; Toledo, Ohio; Decatur, Illinois; Elmira, New York; Rockford, Illinois and Youngstown, Ohio; you could buy two of each city’s average houses for the price of one Berkshire Hathaway share.

Check out the list below for all the cities where you could buy the average house for less than it would cost you to buy into Berkshire Hathaway. And be prepared to scroll for a minute. It's a long list.
