Many people have endured economic hardship. This year, some of them have found a way to reinvent themselves and, in doing so, find real happiness. Many are refugees from the real-estate industry, one of the state’s most powerful economic engines. When it collapsed, they were forced to make difficult decisions about what came next. The lucky ones learned that desperation can lead to discovery.
