Market awaits key economic reports

As the housing market treks through a tepid, but consistent, recovery, economists are keeping a close eye on consumer and housing-related data.

In the week ahead, they’ll get a sampling of how much money consumers are able to spend when the Gallup U.S. Consumer Spending report is released Monday morning.  (Click here to access all Gallup reports)

In addition, a few reports may shed some light on the strength of the housing recovery.

The latest Mortgage Bankers Association’s update on mortgage application filings is due Wednesday, a day before initial jobless claims. Also on Wednesday, the Fed will release its latest consumer credit report, a comprehensive update on consumer borrowing.

The study serves as a type of barometer that evaluates whether consumers can afford large-scale purchases.

Several Fed Bank heads also will speak this week. Those on the speaking circuit include Dallas Fed Bank President Richard Fisher on Monday, followed by Chicago Fed Bank head Charles Evans on Tuesday, Philadelphia Fed Bank leader Charles Plosser on Wednesday and Cleveland Fed Bank president Sandra Pianalto Wednesday afternoon.
