The national average home loan amount for 2011 was slightly more than $222,000, with Hawaii loans averaging more than triple the national figure. State averages for home loan amounts ranged from $137,182 in Mississippi to $667,299 in Hawaii, according to an annual survey conducted by Lending Tree this year.
At $222,262, the national average still fell well below the top states, with Washington, D.C., New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Virginia and California all posting averages above $300,000. The states with the lowest averages were Mississippi, Nebraska, Delaware, Indiana and Iowa, all falling below $150,000.
The loan amounts are up from 2010, however, when the national average stood at $220,507. Hawaii, also the highest average in 2010, saw an increase of more than $200,000 while the five lowest loan states ranged from $145,000 to $160,000.
