Attorneys General mortgage settlement monitor launches military outreach

The Office of Mortgage Settlement Oversight launched its military outreach program for service members and their advocates to digitally report any mortgage servicing complaints on Monday.

The forms will better inform the settlement’s oversight. Monitor Joseph Smith of the national mortgage servicing settlement has two specific online forms for military staff and their supporters. There are also fact sheets listed to explain specifics of the national mortgage settlement that apply to them.

“The national mortgage settlement has particular provisions specific to service members, and we want to make sure they’re aware of them,” Smith said.

He added, “I also want to know if any of our nation’s veterans are experiencing wrongful treatment from their mortgage servicer, as it will help me better oversee the settlement and ensure they find appropriate counsel for their issue.”

Smith will collect the complaints and investigate any suspicious trends as banks move forward with executing the agreement.

The information gathered from the reports will serve as a tool to track how servicers are dealing with their customers.

“It is my responsibility to help make this settlement meaningful for borrowers,” Smith said. “That obligation is especially important for the men and women who serve in our military. I hope that this information will be helpful to them, and they will let me know if they do not see improvements.”
