It maintains enforcement authority over banks, credit unions, securities firms, payday lenders, mortgage-servicing operations, foreclosure relief services, debt collectors, and other financial companies in pursuit of its mission to provide consumer protection in the financial sector.

Founded in 2011, the CFPB is based in Washington, D.C.
