Senate GOP Vows to Block FHA Commissioner-Hopeful in Coming Vote

While Acting Federal Housing Administration Commissioner Carol Galante made it through a Senate Banking Committee vote earlier this week, thus advancing to a full senate vote, it was not without some strong Republican opposition that many say is likely to stick around.

The Obama administration’s pick for FHA chief has run into trouble, the Wall Street Journal reports, “amid concerns that the agency will require a taxpayer bailout.”

Galante was approved by the Senate committee by a 13-9 vote as several Republicans voiced concerns about the health of the FHA, citing the agency’s annual audit.

“I think we need people now in the administration with a sense of urgency about the need to turn things around, reduce our debt and to avoid further bailouts,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.). “She does not appear to have that sense of urgency.”

Even one Republican Senator, Bob Corker (R., Tenn.), who voted in favor of Galante’s nomination, said he might block it later on the Senate floor.
