The number of mortgages approved for house purchase by banks in the UK rose to a five-month high in May, but net lending to non-financial companies fell further due to weak demand for loans, the British Bankers’ Association said Wednesday. The trade association said the main retail-banking groups approved 36,709 mortgages for house purchase in May, up from 35,964 in April and the highest total since December.
