The U.S. would have to immediately appoint an inspector general at the agency overseeing mortgage- finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under legislation introduced by Representative Darrell Issa of California. “Fannie and Freddie have become the largest taxpayer bailout in American history,” Issa, the senior Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said in an e-mailed statement today. “It defies common sense to leave them without proper oversight while the federal government keeps giving them unlimited access to its ATM card.”
