Probably the best advice I’ve received is what our CTO Michael Kolbrener calls his “Five Rules”. He told his kids: be on time, know where your stuff is, listen, try your hardest and look out for your brother. They’re all great, but the two rules I keep coming back to are listening and looking out for your brother. I try to step back and listen instead of just adding another idea to the discussion right away. It gives me a wider perspective to make a decision from. As for looking out for your brother, I think of it as looking out for our team. You can’t succeed on your own, so the team comes first.
