Golden Globe nominations prove you need to see The Big Short

Even 99 Homes snagged a nomination

The financial crisis struck a chord with Hollywood this year as two major motion pictures were listed in the nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, which were announced early Thursday morning.

The Big Short was one of three motion pictures to lead the nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, which were announced early Thursday morning.

The comedy motion picture flashes back to the 2008 timeframe where the subprime debacle was just taking hold.

The cast of characters bet against the big banks, and potentially, the American economy to get rich while the Empire crumbled.

Add in a couple of Hollywood A-listers and you get The Big Short movie, based on the book by Michael Lewis.

Golden Globe nominations for The Big Short include:

  • Best motion picture – musical or comedy
  • Best performance by an actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy – Christian Bale
  • Best performance by an actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy – Steve Carell
  • Best screenplay – motion picture – Charles Randolph, Adam Mckay

The only motion picture to receive more nominations was Carol, with 5. Both The Revenant and Steve Jobs tied The Big Short, with each receiving 4 nominations.

Watch the trailer here since the movie isn’t even out yet. It’s set to hit theatres on Dec. 22.

For now, here’s a brief clip from the movie that will get you excited to watch it or at least help give the best real life, comedic example for why the crisis happened.

99 Homes, which hit theatres on Oct. 9, also scored a Golden Globe nomination. Check here for the full trailer.

Michael Shannon snagged a nomination for the best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture.

According to an article in Slate:

Set in Florida in the aftermath of the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, the suspenseful drama stars Michael Shannon as real-estate shark Rick Carver and Andrew Garfield as the man that Carver kicks out of his home and then tries to make his apprentice.

When the film first came out, Michael Shannon was already gaining “Oscar buzz” in his portrayal of a real estate version of Gordon Gekko.

Check here for the full list of nominations. The Golden Globes will be presented on Jan. 10 and transmitted live by NBC.
