In 2010, Mark McDonough left a successful career in advertising with a drive to work in small business and add value to both his community and in the lives of the people he worked with. He joined Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Winans in an executive role with the goal of growing the firm from its then 35 agents and $2.3 million in gross commissions. Moving forward to today, McDonough has purchased the brokerage and serves as Owner and CEO of BHGRE Winans which has more than 200 agents and closes over $13 million in gross commissions.

Over the years, McDonough has added great value to the brokerage and its agents. The way he looks at growth is not about how many people we can have at the company but rather how productive we can make the agents who are already with us. McDonough brings his background in marketing to this industry that has historically thought about branding, marketing and technology as an afterthought. 

Though McDonough has been running the brokerage for the last 10 years, this most recent year, he and his wife, Leah, purchased the brokerage from the previous owners and McDonough has moved from president of the brokerage to Owner and CEO. During a year that many agents struggled, the company grew and outpaced the Dallas-Fort Worth market by a wide margin thanks to McDonough and the leadership team’s focus on driving business growth for our agents. McDonough has had his fingerprints all over every aspect of this business and is very hands-on with his style of leadership.

What is one habit that has helped you succeed?

Everyday I remind myself that I still have so much to learn. I have a deep hunger for knowledge and dedicate a lot of my day to gathering information so that I may distill it into actionable intel. When you accept that there is always someone smarter or more knowledgeable about a subject than you are, it makes you a much better listener.
