Where builders win in 2026: Faster decisions powered by reliable data

John McManus of HousingWire and The Builder’s Daily sat down with Bob Swainhart, VP of Enterprise Solutions Group at Constellation HomeBuilder Systems, to talk about what’s next for builders navigating uncertainty — and what separates those who survive from those who scale.

Swainhart is cautiously optimistic regarding the outlook for builders over the coming months, but he’s clear about what will separate builders who capitalize on improved conditions from those who will struggle to keep up.

“As we look forward to a more favorable sales cycle and the expanded use of technology, it’s really about leveraging this incredible amount of data in a timely fashion to be able to pivot and make decisions quickly,” Swainhart said.

For executives, speed involves avoiding prolonged missteps rather than simply reacting impulsively.

“That’s what decision makers and executives want,” he said. “They want the ability to make quick decisions so that they are not doing something silly for two weeks, four weeks, six weeks, six months, a year longer than they should have.”

In today’s environment, hesitation carries a cost, and so does operating with incomplete or outdated information. Swainhart argues that the path forward starts with standard, reliable data that flows across the organization without friction.

“When you think about the automation of complex manual processes, the elimination of data silos and the impact that has on an organization,” he said, “it means that everybody in the organization has an opportunity to be focused on not just creation of manual reports or updating some spreadsheets somewhere.”

Too often, valuable talent is consumed by producing reports instead of interpreting them. Automation changes that equation.

“They’re actually freed up from all of that tedious work and able to focus primarily on margin protection, sales, marketing, brand awareness, customer experience — things that really impact the business and their reputation and the operational efficiency, profitability, performance, etc.”

For Swainhart, that shift is the foundation of what the builder of the future should look like. The goal is not simply digitization, but transformation — creating an environment where routine data capture and reporting are as automated as possible, allowing teams to focus entirely on growth and performance.

“It would be incredible if we can get to the point where the creation of that data, the day-to-day work stuff, is as automated as possible,” he said. “And they’re all focused 100% on helping the business grow, be more profitable, be more efficient, effective and drive incredible referrals from customers and have great customer satisfaction scores.”

That vision extends beyond operational efficiency. It touches brand equity, customer satisfaction and long-term profitability — outcomes that hinge on the ability to make confident, timely decisions.

“But it starts with this creation of standard, reliable data that allows them to make decisions quickly,” Swainhart concludes.

As builders prepare for what could be a shift from defensive posture to expansion mode, Swainhart’s message is straightforward: technology should remove friction, not add it.
