  • New Home Sales Rise After Hitting Record Low

    After dropping over 10 percent in January, new single-family home sales rebounded 4.7 percent in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 337,000, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The upward movement in February's sales was the first nationwide increase since last July, and well above the 323,000 pace expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. Nonetheless, February's sales were still down 41.1 percent compared to the same time last year.

  • New Home Sales Dive 48% Since 2008

    New single-family home sales in January came in at an adjusted annual rate of 309,00, down 10.2 percent from a month earlier and 48.2 percent from the rate seen in the same month a year earlier, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The South experienced the highest number of new home sales in the month, with 172,000 units sold, while the Northeast reported the smallest number of new home sales, with 27,000 units sold.

  • Rate of New Home Sales Down 14.7 Percent Since November

    New single-family home sales ranked a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 331,000 units in December, according to a joint report released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with the U.S. Census Bureau. The rate came in 14.7 percent below the rate recorded in November. The average sales price of new homes sold in December was $246,900. The seasonally adjusted estimate of new homes for sale at the end of the month came in at 357,000, a 12.9-month supply at the current sales rate, according to HUD's data.

  • Downward Revision Aids New Home Sales

    Sales of new homes in the U.S. rose unexpectedly during September, as builders aggressively cut prices and buyers looked for bargains ahead of the latest round of credit crunching towards the end of last month. Or did they? New-home sales rose 2.7 percent to 464,000 last month, based primarily on a downwardly-revised August total of 452,000 -- the second straight month of strong downward revisions to previous month's numbers. Such revisions have helped new home sales post initial gains in both August and September.
