    Wall Street bellwether Morgan Stanley [stock MS][/stock] on Wednesday morning reported a Q1 2009 net loss of $190 million, or 57 cents a share, compared with year-earlier net income of $1.43 billion, or $1.26 a share. The loss missed consensus estimates from most analysts by a wide margin; according to a Thomson-Reuters poll, most had expected a 8 cents a share net loss.

  • Home Builder NVR Sees Profits Fall 59%

    For one home builder, profit may be falling -- but at least there's still profit to be had. Reston, Va.-based home builder NVR Inc. [stock NVR][/stock] said on Tuesday morning that net income in Q1 2009 fell to $18m, or $3.02 a share, from $43.5 million, or $7.42 a share, one year earlier. The 59% drop in net income came amid a 37% decline in revenue, according to a press statement; the firm saw revenue fall to $548.3 million from $869.9 million.

    A widely-watched measure of future home sales activity jumped 6.3 percent in April, an unexpected result for a housing market that many believe is still in the throes of a long-term correction. The National Association of Realtors' pending home sales index rose to 88.2 in April from a reading of 83.0 in March, the trade group reported Monday morning — it’s highest level since last October, although still 13.1 percent below year-ago levels.
