  • Northern California's Housing Market Remains Frozen

    The waiting game between northern California's Bay Area buyers, sellers and lending institutions continued last month as sales dipped below 4,000 for the second month in a row, a real estate information service reported Thursday. A total of 3,989 new and resale houses and condos sold in the nine-county Bay Area in February. That was up 11.2 percent from 3,586 in January, and down 36.7 percent from 6,305 for February 2007, DataQuick Information Systems said.

    Housing markets in both southern and northern California reached 20-year lows in January as sales fell to new lows amid a crisis that, for now, seems to have no end in sight. Southern California home sales dipped below 10,000 transactions for the first time in more than 20 years, while Bay Area home sales plunged below 4,000 transactions for the first time in over two decades, real estate information service DataQuick Information Systems reported earlier this week.

  • Calif. Foreclosures Reach Highest Level in Fifteen Years

    The number of mortgage default notices filed against California homeowners jumped to its highest level in more than fifteen years during the fourth quarter of 2007, a real estate information service reported Tuesday. Lending institutions sent homeowners 81,550 default notices during the October-to-December period. That was up by 12.4 percent from 72,571 the previous quarter, and up 114.6 percent from 37,994 for fourth-quarter 2006, according to DataQuick Information Systems.
