HousingWire, the most influential source of news and information for the U.S. mortgage and housing markets, is looking for a talented mortgage reporter to join our growing newsroom of business journalists.
These are some of the most influential companies in America – and we’re looking for someone to gain an insider’s understanding of the aggressive tactics some lenders employ, the growing rivalries, and the challenges they face in integrating technology and maintaining regulatory compliance.
The successful candidate will be able to consistently produce A-1 quality stories that examine how large and small mortgage lenders – from Rocket Mortgage, United Wholesale Mortgage and Homepoint, to JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and your local bank – survive or thrive in an ultra-competitive and highly regulated environment.
The mortgage reporter will cover big retail banks, independent mortgage banks, nonbanks, wholesale lenders, fintech companies, and more. We’re looking for a mix of breaking news coverage, analysis and longform features.
Our newsroom of award-winning reporters and editors prides itself on revealing discriminatory and predatory business practices in the housing and mortgage industries.
Prior experience covering a business beat is a major plus. The ideal candidate knows how to read a company balance sheet, can translate jargon into plain English, asks tough questions, writes clean-but-lively copy, and is naturally curious. Critical thinking skills are paramount.
This position is remote – the candidate does not have to be in New York City or Dallas, where we are headquartered. We pay very competitively, offer a 401K match, full health benefits, unlimited PTO.
Development is a key component of our larger company strategy – we’re constantly thinking about how to advance talented reporters and editors.
The opportunity exists for the successful candidate to have their own exclusive newsletter, podcast or web series. If you have another idea, we’d love to hear it. Giving our reporters a platform to share their reporting and insights is something we’re very comfortable with.
Built on a foundation of independent and original journalism, HousingWire reaches over 90,000 newsletter subscribers daily and over 1 million unique visitors each month. HousingWire is part of HW Media, which also owns and operates FinLedger and Real Trends.
Salary Range: $45k to $55k, depending on experience
