Regulators extend foreclosure review deadline again

Federal regulators extended the deadline again for borrowers to request a foreclosure review for possible errors.

The Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said borrowers will have until Dec. 31 to request a review.

This is the third extension. The original deadline was April 30, which was then extended to the end of May, then September.

Eligible borrowers must have had a foreclosure filed against them between 2009 and 2010.

The 14 largest mortgage servicers signed consent orders with the Fed and the OCC in April 2011. Part of the deal included a review for any missteps or abuses ranging from documentation problems to dual-track foreclosures.

The amounts to be paid to borrowers can range from $500 to $125,000, plus equity, according to recent guidance.

Just 193,639 borrowers requested a free review as of May 31, according to the OCC.

The servicers hired third-party consultants to review samples from more than 4 million foreclosure filings.
