Randy Wheeler, managing director of TA at Charles Schwab, to speak at engage.talent summit

Find out how to hire top digital talent in a competitive market

When it comes to competition for top tech talent, mortgage companies aren’t just competing with each other — they are up against some of the most successful and best-known brands in the world. That’s why we’re excited to have Randy Wheeler, managing director of talent acquisition at Charles Schwab, speak at engage.talent on Feb. 6.

Wheeler has more than 15 years of experience hiring for tech roles, serving as the worldwide analog recruiting manager at Texas Instruments before his current role leading the digital and technical services hiring at Schwab.

Hiring for digital roles in tech hubs like San Francisco, Denver and Austin require companies to bring their A-game to attract top talent. In 2018, Schwab created Digital Accelerator teams in both Austin and San Francisco to reimagine how to serve its retail investors.

The accelerator teams take an agile approach to deploying new technologies and are made up of talent from every part of the client experience. Staffing these teams with top talent required Wheeler’s team to hire hundreds of people in cities that were already seeing record low unemployment in technology sectors.

To distinguish itself from the competition and give potential hires a preview of the Schwab culture, Schwab hosted a series of Digital Talk events— styled after TED Talks. Taking a personal approach, Schwab tech leaders served as table hosts for attendees so potential hires could talk to them about the roles available and understand the technical aspects of each role.

The Digital Talks are just one of the out-of-the box solutions Schwab is using to attract tech talent to financial services, and one of the topics Wheeler will cover in the session at engage.talent: Hiring Digital Talent in a Competitive Market. Wheeler will be joined by two other digital hiring experts on that panel: Ashley Burnstad, head of people at Roostify, and Matthew Turner, executive talent acquisition specialist at UWM.
