Julie Williams, chief counsel at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, will retire and step down in September.
Williams served twice as acting comptroller in 1998 and again in 2004. She worked on developing bank privacy policies. Williams also led efforts to preserve the OCC’s preemption status and to exempt national banks form state lending laws. Architects of the Dodd-Frank Act tried unsuccessfully to remove this preemption in its reforms.
A current project of hers continues to combine rules for national bans and federal savings associations.
Williams began her regulatory career in 1983, when she joined the Federal Home Loan Bank board.
“In my few months as Comptroller, Julie played an integral role in my transition and has played an indispensable role in my leadership team,” said recent Comptroller of the Currency Thomas Curry.
