Michigan approved a foreclosure legislation package that doesn’t shorten the redemption period from six months to 60 days, an article in The Detroit News said. 

According to the report, the legislation makes it easier for the lender and/or new purchaser from a sheriff’s sale to speed up the process under certain circumstances: if the property has been vacated or if there’s evidence of damage or theft.

Meanwhile, opponents argued that the shortened time length would not allow enough time for troubled borrowers to work out 11th-hour agreements that could save them from loosing their home, the article said. 

“There are still many problems that need to be resolved with the lingering foreclosure crisis, but we avoided taking a step backwards with the changes approved today,” said Ananich, vice chairman of the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee.
