The makeup of the bond market

It’s no secret that ownership of government bonds has been shifting to foreign entities because — let’s face it — somebody has to buy them. 

As of the fourth quarter of 2012, foreign ownership of government bonds was a whopping 40%, according to Goldman Sachs (GS).

This is far larger than even the Federal Reserve‘s massive balance sheet, which holds 14%.
