Institutional investors still favor private real estate funds

Over a 30-year period, real estate investment trusts have beaten private real estate funds by an average of 5%. But institutional investors remain cool to (), partly because they are more volatile than private funds.

Robert Steers, co founder of Cohen & Steers (INB), said investors favor funds that lock up their money even though they aren’t earning anything extra — the so-called illiquidity premium.
