Total building permits issued for residential units declined along the East Coast from October to November, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Total building permits issued for units fell 3% in Delaware, 29% in New Jersey and 18% in Pennsylvania. Total building permits issued for residential units also fell 12% for the nation.

Permits issued for single-family homes declined at even greater rates in all three states as well as the nation, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

Permits issued for multifamily residences rose over the month in Pennsylvania, remained generally flat in Delaware and plummeted in New Jersey.

On a year-over-year basis, growth in permit issuance remained positive throughout the region and nation.

Total residential permits issued year-to-date rose in Delaware by 37%, in Pennsylvania by 20% and the nation by 34%, compared with the first 11 months of last year.

The value of the permits similarly increased 31% in Delaware, 24% in Pennsylvania and 34% in the nation.

In New Jersey, total permits rose 37%, while permit values rose 19%, indicating a trend toward building smaller units, the Philadelphia Fed said.

The Philadelphia Fed applied a seasonal adjustment and three-month moving average to total permits to remove the seasonality and monthly volatility in permits.
