Confirmation hearings begin on Fed board

The Senate Banking Committee is scheduled to begin confirmation hearings on Tuesday for Harvard University economics professor Jeremy Stein and former private-equity executive Jerome Powell.

Both are President Barack Obama’s nominees to fill two vacancies on the Fed board, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal. Both men are considered unlikely to push the central bank in novel directions, according to current and former colleagues, students and others familiar with their work.
