A California law professor launched a legal clinic at the University of California-Irvine, charging its students with assisting in the oversight of funds allotted to the state through the massive mortgage servicing settlement.

Katherine Porter, the UC-Irvine law professor behind the program, was selected by California Attorney General Kamala Harris to oversee settlement funds.

California as part of the settlement is expected to obtain as much as $18 billion in servicing funds.

Students serving on the clinic will help homeowners with loan modifications, while also communicating with the public.

Participants also will prepare reports on compliance while implementing compliance plans.
