Happy Father’s Day, here’s what dads want in a home

No. 1 should come as no surprise

Shopping for a home might not be the top activity to do on Father’s Day, but for those families still shopping for a home around this time, there are several important factors that most dads are looking for.

HousingWire worked with Bruce Elliott, president-elect of the Orlando Regional Realtor Association and realtor with Regal R.E. Professionals, to uncover what the top factors that dads look for in a home.

“I’ve worked with a lot of dads, and so have our Orlando Regional Realtor Association members – the pros who spend a large portion of their day showing potential buyers homes – and what typically tops dads’ checklist is a garage.”

“I see men heavily focus on the potential of a garage. They’ll spend some time evaluating the ability of the garage to hold a certain length of boat, jet skis or other toys, upright tool chests and a workbench, or, of course, the ever-growing supply of kids’ sports stuff.”

But the garage isn’t the only thing catching dad’s eye.

“Dads are also commonly in search of a quiet neighborhood, a pool and outside living space, split floorplan, nice flooring, tech-ready man space, private office or a built-in barbecue,” said Elliott.

Then there are is handful of dads that go further outside the box.

“We also get some less traditional requests like a home that features a separate snack kitchen, cigar lounge, and even a quiet napping room just for dad. Requests for home brewing space has also been on the rise,” he said.

At the end of the day, Elliott said, “Regardless of the unique requests we see, most dads want whatever makes their wives and families happy – and at a bargain!”
