California governor plans to sign veterans housing law

According to U-T San Diego, California Governor Jerry Brown plans to sign legislation that will ask voters to spend pre-approved bond money to provide rental housing and related services to veterans instead of restricting those funds to loans for the purchase of single-family homes and farms.

“It speaks to the commitment we all have to stand up and create housing opportunities for veterans who put their lives on the line for us,” Assembly Speaker John Pérez, D-Los Angeles, said in an interview

Phil Landis, president of Veterans Village, is expected to be on hand. He had lobbied for the measure, telling lawmakers in a letter earlier this year: “While the voter-passed initiative (in 2008) failed to help a single veteran buy a home, AB 639 would generate thousands of affordable and supportive apartments.”
