NRMLA Annual Meeting to Feature Political Figures, HUD Officials

The National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association will host its annual meeting this year in San Antonio, Texas, October 15-17.

This year’s meeting, “Reverse Mortgage Roundup,” will feature input from representatives of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as a new addition in the form of roundtable discussions among groups of professionals. With the conference taking place just three weeks before Election Day, NRMLA execs expect policy to take center stage in the conversation this year.

“The meeting will feature a couple of different and interesting perspectives on policy and budget matters,” says Peter Bell, NRMLA president and CEO. “It will be two and a half weeks prior to the election. There’s a certain excitement that comes with that.”

Policy-focused speakers scheduled include former Senator Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), who is now a reverse mortgage spokesman for American Advisors Group, as well as economist Jared Bernstein, who has worked with Vice President Joe Biden and is regularly quoted in mainstream media outlets as a political pundit.

Acting Federal Housing Administrator Carol Galante, as well as Deputy Assistant Secretary Charles Coulter and Ginnie Mae President Ted Tozer are among HUD attendees.

Professionals from the financial planning community are expected to attend as one of the industry’s newest affiliates following recent research among planners about the uses of reverse mortgages as part of a comprehensive retirement planning strategy.

“There has been a lot of work in the financial planning community in talking about the importance of reverse mortgages as a financial management tool,” Bell says.

Several sessions will take on a roundtable format, rather than a traditional panel format, to encompass reverse mortgage counselors, loan originators and underwriters.

Conference registration is now open through NRMLA for the October event.
