The government has made great strides in trying to eliminate housing discrimination, but one area remains unaddressed, Progress in Lending claims in a new report.
Currently, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has a rule that mandates the owners and operators of HUD-assisted or insured housing make housing available without consideration to an applicant’s sexual orientation or gender identity, Phil Hall notes in a blog from Progress in Lending.
However, the rule only covers the FHA mortgage insurance programs as well as HUD’s public and assisted housing programs, leaving out a plethora of firms and companies outside the department's authority, Hall pointed out.
Overall, Hall says only 20 states plus the District of Columbia and more than 150 municipalities and counties have laws that clearly prohibit housing discrimination against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.
In the end, Hall believes there is work left to do to get Congress to agree on a bill.
