HAMP adjustments unlock the chains binding military members

Military members who receive orders to change stations generally end up in the same pickle as other Americans: They possess underwater home loans, making it difficult for them to sell their properties and move.

But Hope Now, an alliance of private sector mortgage firms and nonprofit counselors, claims this changed when the government expanded the Home Affordable Modification Program to help more military families in underwater situations.

The changes were made after the government recognized the strain hitting military members who receive permanent change of station notices, which require them to move to a new base. The adjustments to HAMP allow these borrowers to modify their loans through HAMP, an option that was not previously available.
