With donations in tow, Habitat for Humanity is taking over areas of Portland, Ore., left behind by the housing meltdown.
The New York Times reports the nonprofit bought up vacant land and bank-owned properties at the depth of the last recession through a $10 million land-bank fund.
The group has since become the 10th largest homebuilder in the Portland area as it builds and rehabs houses. It’s a model, Kirk Johnson writes, also followed by other Habitat branches in Nevada and Florida.
