[VIDEO] HousingWire readers, here’s the nation’s top news

Here is what’s happening around the country

Today, HousingWire takes a look at some of the most provocative and significant news stories nationwide.

Our coverage ranges from Supreme Court confirmation hearings, political Twitter wars, highly-publicized sport branding decisions, market milestones and voting forecasts. Whatever’s happening around the country, it’s here for you to read.

Tuesday is the first day of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing. Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court has been met with protests and has caused a severe backlash from the Democratic Party.

Democrats have also accused Republicans of holding back on releasing documentation from Kavanaugh's time serving as deputy White House counsel and staff secretary under former President George W. Bush.

Controversial football player Colin Kaepernick has become the face of Nike's “Just Do It” campaign. The civil rights activist triggered a national protest in 2016 when he kneeled during the U.S. national anthem to protest American police brutality.

Since then, dozens of athletes have followed in his lead, and Kaepernick has even won several awards for his activism, including TIME’s 2017 Person of the Year and Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.

Nike’s latest endorsement has been met with denouncement from some of the brand's fans, with some going as far as burning Nike-branded clothing and shoes. The National Police Organization has also called for a Nike boycott.

President Donald Trump shocked many around the nation with his latest arsenal of tweets aimed at Attorney General Jeff Sessions. This surely is not the president’s first run with aggressive tweets, but many are calling his latest remarks a direct attack on the U.S. justice system.

On Monday, Trump took to Twitter to chastise the Justice Department's decision to charge two Republican lawmakers in two different criminal cases involving insider trading and misuse of campaign funds.

Amazon’s stock has now reached a total of $1 trillion in valuation. This means the company now joins Apple on the elite list of Fortune 500 companies to garner as much wealth as many small nations.

In July of last year, Amazon quietly revealed its plans to expand into the real estate industry by launching its “Hire a Realtor” page. The company is also rumored to begin offering home insurance by using its robots and other home devices. Can Amazon really do it all? They think they can.

Lastly, but equally as important, there has been a surge in female and Democrat voters heading to the polls. New 2018 midterm polls show Democrats have a 14-point advantage over Republicans in the generic ballot.

A recent article from CNN indicated that female voters are planning to vote for democratic leaders at a higher rate than during past midterms. According to the network's poll, 50% of voters claimed they would vote for a democratic candidate in the upcoming midterm elections, whereas 42% said they would vote Republican.
