A Park County, Colorado, sheriff's deputy was killed and two other officers were wounded Wednesday while trying to serve an eviction notice at the home of a community activist, an article in the Denver Post by Jesse Paul and Elizabeth Hernandez said.

According to the article, the deputy who died was a 12-year veteran of the Park County sheriff's office, and one of two wounded officers — who is an 11-year veteran of the office — suffered life-threatening injuries. The other was not considered in danger.

The three deputies went to the home to serve an eviction notice at a home on Iris Drive and were met by a man at the home who opened fire with a rifle, Susan Medina, a Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman.

Property records list the resident of the home as Martin Wirth, who once ran for state Senate and has been listed as an Occupy Denver activist. The records show he defaulted on the house in 2013 and that foreclosure proceedings followed.

The article explained that a website for the Colorado Foreclosure Resistance Coalition had posted a notice in 2014 that Wirth faced eviction.

The Denver Post article quoted the website saying:

"We are now calling for a non-violent eviction resistance at Martin's. (Wirth) has been an invaluable part of Occupy Denver from the very early days, he has sheltered people on several occasions as well as hosting the Occupy retreat. His property is an amazing mountain escape with lots of room for tents and camping."

Later, the group revoked its support for Wirth, saying in a Facebook posting that it "cannot in good conscience as an organization support the tactics he is proposing."

The article added that officials have not released the names of anyone involved in the shooting, and authorities do not believe that other residents are in danger at this point.
