Michael Krimminger, general counsel for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., is leaving the banking regulator and joining the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton as a partner in the Washington, D.C., office.

Krimminger was appointed acting general counsel at the FDIC in November 2010 and then general counsel in February 2011 by then-FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair.

Krimminger previously served Bair as special adviser for policy and as deputy for policy. He also served on the board of directors from 2006 to 2011.

Prior to joining FDIC in 1991, Krimminger practiced both banking law and litigation in Los Angeles and Washington.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina and received a law degree from Duke University School of Law.

His last day will be May 25.

Richard Osterman, deputy general counsel, will serve as acting general counsel until a replacement at the FDIC is named.
