4 variables buyers felt left in the dark about

Homebuyers wish they had a do-over

Purchasing your first home is one of the biggest decisions that you'll ever make, yet the odds of you wishing you could do it over and differently is quite high.

According to a recent report from Chase that surveyed 807 recent homebuyers, nine out of every 10 buyers felt prepared when they bought their first home, but in hindsight, 56% wish they were armed with more knowledge about the financial aspects of purchasing a home.

“While consumers said they felt prepared to buy a home and were satisfied with their home purchase, our results found that there are challenges and areas for improvement,” said Lisa Foradori, chief marketing officer for Chase Mortgage Banking.

More specifically, 22% of buyers wish they had known the ins and outs of closing on the house, 19% wish they had been informed on making the offer and negotiating and 15% wish they had known about financing a home.

Here are four keys factors buyers either wish they had done or knew ahead of time.

home

Roughly 39% of homebuyers said that they would buy a home of a different size, for a different price or in a different neighborhood, knowing what they know now.

clock

Of those surveyed, 40% said that they were surprised by how long the homebuying process took, while 16% said they got a pleasant surprise on timing.

construction

Although more than 80% of buyers considered their homes move-in ready, 76% have done or are planning to do renovations to their home in the near term.

closing

Two-thirds of buyers sought advice from real estate agents, while 45% turned to banks, mortgage bankers and loan officers. Fifty-six percent of buyers wished they had been armed with more knowledge about the financial aspects of purchasing a home.
