Due to a limited supply of rental homes in suburban and beach towns that suffered damages from Hurricane Sandy, many displaced residents may be forced to temporary live far from “home” as their properties are restored, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In some cases, residents could be placed in housing up to 50 miles from their homes.

The Wall Street Journal article reports, “In Ocean County, which includes 45 miles of beach front and many of the Jersey Shore beach towns devastated by the storm, 14,058 applicants are eligible for housing assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, but only 232 rentals were identified as of mid-November.”

FEMA stated that numerous efforts are being made to provide housing as close as possible to the homes of the displaced, but flexibility by homeowners is appreciated.
