Freddie Mac finds REO rental fraud on Craigslist

Freddie Mac announced some of its real-estate owned properties are being successfully rented out.

Here’s the problem, Freddie Mac isn’t doing the renting.

In her Executive Perspectives blog, Freddie VP Joan Ferenczy shows the results of fraud investigations.

Ads for rentals on Craigslist show Freddie properties, but scammers are fooling renters into thinking they are the landlords.

Backgrounds are checked, leases are signed.

Tenants arrive with their stuff and the key usually doesn’t work.

Or the fraudster changed the locks, in which case the people live in the accommodation until the listing agent suddenly shows up.

Ferenczy lists prevention tips against the fraud in her blog.
