TD Charitable Foundation, the giving arm of TD Bank and TD Banknorth will offer $2m in grants to support affordable housing along the east coast through its 2009 “Housing for Everyone” competition.

From Maine to Florida, the operating area of the banks, non-profit programs can submit their creative solutions for a rocky housing market in the hopes of landing one of the 56 grants, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.

This is the third giveaway for the “Housing for Everyone” competition, which was started in 2006. Since then, the competition has given away $5m and built more than 3,000 homes. TD Charitable sprung to life in 2002 and has since given $49m to struggling communities.

“Now more than ever, there’s a need to help families stay in their homes, and protect our neighborhoods from the effects of foreclosure and abandonment,” Elizabeth K. Warn, president of the TD Charitable Foundation said in a release.

Qualified candidates must have a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status, develop or maintain affordable housing or provide housing-related programs to low-income individuals and serve the area of TD Bank and TD Banknorth.

Applicants have until Sept. 4, 2009 to submit their plans. Awards will be announced in October.
